HISTORICAL

#1 ANINI-Y CHURCH (Anini-y)

 

     A massive white coral building located in poblacion Anini-y, 40.46 kms. south of San Jose de Buenavista. Built during the Spanish era in 19th century. The church is made of coral reefs carved into thick blocks to form an adobe and were glued using thousands of egg whites/yolks. Early locals/settlers of the town were the prime workers and carpenters of the church. Some stories tell that people of the town were forced to contribute anything such as goods and food for the Spanish priest as well as raising chicken to lay more eggs to be used for building of the church.

 

#2 OLD WATCHTOWER (Libertad)

 

     143 kms. north of San Jose. It served to warn natives of approaching pirates.

#3 EBJ FREEDOM PARK (San Jose)

 

     In front of the Antique Provincial Capitol building in honor of the late Gov. Evelio B. Javier who was assassinated on February 11, 1986 while defending freedom and democracy from the forces of martial law.

#4 TELEGRAFO HILL BOUNDARY (San Jose)

 

     Straddling the Iloilo-Antique boundary, it commands a view of San Jose, Antique. The hill was a stronghold during World War II. The place is ideal for hiking and horseback riding. One can take a jeepney from the capital of San Jose to reach the take-off point. A lot of hiking may be necessary

#5 ST. AGUSTINE'S HIGH SCHOOL (Patnongon)

 

     25 kms. from San Jose, Antique; its building is a remodelled old Spanish convent near the site of the ruins of the century-old Spanish church. St. Agustin's run by Mill Hill Missionaries. The St. Augustine Academy was built as a convent in the late 19th century as part of a larger church complex. While we can regret that other elements of the complex have been lost, the convent itself is a classical revival treasure.

#6 MALANDOG MARKER (Hamtic)

 

     7 kms. south of San Jose, Antique; which marks the: "Landing site of the first Malayan settlers 1200 A.D."

#7 ESTACA HILL (Bugasong)

 

     43 kms. from San Jose, Antique; with an elevation of some 200 feet and a view of the sea and hills surrounding Bugasong. The hill was once the site of a watchtower to warn people of Muslim pirates.
